Do in-text citations count in university essay word limits?

Most academic institutions adhering to APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago, and Harvard standards exclude parenthetical citations (e.g. (Author, Year) or [1-4]) and the final References list from official word count caps.

How does WordCountr detect citations without deleting my text?

WordCountr uses localized natural language regular expressions to identify author-year citation patterns, bracketed reference markers, and trailing bibliography headers, calculating Net Essay Words while preserving your original manuscript.

Gross Word Count vs. Net Word Count Explained

Standard word processors like Google Docs and Microsoft Word only calculate Gross Word Count. They have no concept of academic citation syntax and penalize students by counting citations like (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979, pp. 263-291) as 6 words. In a 4,000-word term paper, citations and bibliographies can inflate your count by 500 to 1,000 words.

WordCountr calculates both Gross Words and official Net Essay Words, giving students and researchers confidence before hitting the university upload portal.
